Waltham Forest and FC Romania will face each other again this week after the two sides battled out a 2-2 draw in the Extra Preliminary Round of this season’s FA Cup.
The opening half-hour or so was pretty even. The home side were being limited to long-range efforts while all Forest’s goal-bound attempts lacked any real power to challenge the Romania keeper.
But with ten minutes to go the half sprung into life, with Mohammed Ahmed saving well from a one-on-one attempt, and Glenn Toonga sending a looping header onto the bar.
Early in the second half the home side were presented another good opportunity but Agebane cut down the Romania forward in the penalty area before he could get his shot away. Despite Ahmed guessing the right way, Gabriel Ghinea made no mistake with the spot-kick.
Abiola Tanimowo had a great chance to level with a one-on-one of his own, but his effort was tame and easily saved. But just three minutes later Mohammed Sagaf put Tanimowo through again and this time the front-man made no mistake.
Forest were enjoying a good spell of pressure, but were were caught napping at the back as Sergiu Pitaru was given enough space in the box to turn and fire into the bottom corner of the net.
It looked like Forest would fall at the first hurdle in this season’s competition, but two minutes into injury time Ohimai Longe was in the right place at the right time to pounce on a loose ball in the Romania area and stroke the ball into the bottom corner.
The winners of the replay (date to be confirmed) will be away to Long Melford in the next round, who beat Essex Senior side Hackney Wick 1-0 on Saturday.
